Re: socal riverbed gurilla garden suggestions
Wed, February 18, 2009 - 10:19 AMwatercress, of course.
depending on how much space is availabe try rice or wild rice?
herbs: mugwort, pennyroyal 9thee have trade value as medicinals)
consider encouraging wild high nutrition edibles: cattails for example.
purslane (called verdolagas in Spanish, it gets top billing now as a heart healthy green, but was denigrated as a weed in WWII victory gardens.)
maybe let it get really wet and try water chestnuts, yum yum.

Re: socal riverbed gurilla garden suggestions
Wed, February 18, 2009 - 10:24 AMseeding a wild riverbed with plants you want and not with pre-existing natives is a very bad and selfish idea, as even seasonal waterways are already living ecosystems. that said, in CA there is a great native resource by zipcode at LasPilitas Nursery:

Re: socal riverbed gurilla garden suggestions
Wed, February 18, 2009 - 9:39 PMI recommend testing the soil first for heavy metals and pcbs and other toxins. You might be able to find info from the state environmental quality department. Riverbeds in LA are likely to be loaded with toxins.
