Many people take over-the-counter antacids for a quick ease of acid reflux, but for most people, a proper diet is the best solution for overcoming acid reflux.

    Acid Reflux Diet Myth

    Myth 1: Drink milk

A lot of people try drinking milk to ease acid reflux before sleep. But often, milk ends up causing acid reflux during sleep. To understand the whole situation, we have to realize that the problem roots from eating too much at dinner time. Eating a big meal at dinner causes excess stomach acid production. Drinking milk could be a quick fix to the acid reflux problem. Unfortunately, milk has a rebound action and would eventually encourage secretion of more stomach acid, which causes the acid reflux. To solve the problem, try adjusting your diet by eating a small meal at dinner and have a small snack such as crackers before sleep.

Myth 2: Avoid coffee, citrus fruits and Spicy food

We have been told for years that coffee, acidic fruit as well as spicy foods can aggravate acid reflux. Therefore, we should avoid these in our daily diet in order to reduce acid reflux. A recent study published in the Archives of Internal Medicine in May 2006 showed that none of these myths hold true. Researchers from the Stanford University found that the only two behavioral changes can reduce symptoms of acid reflux - eating less and elevate your head while sleeping.

    Acid Reflux Diet

First of all, try to eat small, frequent meals instead of three big meals a day. Small amounts of food each time would exert less workload on the stomach and therefore requires less acid secretion for digestion. Make sure to include foods that are high in complex carbohydrates in each meal. These foods, such as rice, breads and pasta, are able to tie up excess stomach acid and are often easy on the stomach.
Avoid high-fat meals such as those from the fast food chains. High fat foods will remain in the stomach longer, thus causing the need for more stomach acid in order to digest them.
But remember, don't overeat! Eating too much of any foods will stimulate the stomach to secret more acids for digestion.
    Avoid or limit alcohol.
Maintain upright position during and at least 45 minutes after eating.
Try elevating the head of bed six to eight inches when lying down.

Don't think that beverages just quickly flow through your stomach without affecting acid production. Surprisingly, a lot of beverages stimulate acid secretion such as beer, wine and pop. The worst of all is beer. It could double your stomach acid within an hour.

I agree with most of that, but I found that when I cut way back on caffeine (for other reasons), my reflux was much, much less.

It is my understanding that there are four things that tend to make the sphincter between the stomach and esophagus open more. These are: dietary fat, caffeine, nicotene, and alcohol.

Staying upright for 45 min to an hour after eating really helps a lot!

Personally, I get good relief from a cup of not-to-strong peppermint tea but I do not know the pregnancy risks involved with peppermint so please check. Do you have an herb shop close? The herbalist there would probably be a great resource.

I find that I get acid reflux when I eat bread or something like pizza. The bulk packs down, I think! It's better to eat salad and less of the "bready" stuff. Eat salad a lot, with everything. Chew things very well! LOTS of chewing!!!

The burning is from the stomach acid coming up....you need to get that to stop.

Cucumber. Sometimes I gag on this one but I realize the gag is something deficient.

Peppemint tea will actually make the problem worse.
Peppermint relaxes sphinter muscles and you don't want that.
Calendula tincture or tea could help this.
Also, I have found that exercise and stretching or yoga can help.
This allow the digestion to flow more freely.
I get this occassionally when I eat really rich food and alot of it.
Eating slowly seems to help me.
      Peace, Julie

Alot of good suggestions, particularly about including some stretching to help ease digestion. I concur that peppermint would not be my choice. What seems to be most effective for me and folks that I work with is a little bit of apple cider vinegar in water. this shouldn't burn as you dilute it quite a bit. You can add approximately 1-2 tsp of vinegar to a cup of water, adjust these ratios so they work for you.
        Blessings

A teaspoon or so of regular baking soda in some water will help you burp.....and neutralize some of the acid.....I knew someone who took it after supper every evening.....

a lot of the rflux and ehartburn priblem n late pregnancy is the baby's feet pshing up against our stomach - it gets corwded! (been there, had the baby do that. having your baby will fix the pro birth and being amazed at how much room there was in my stomach again!
I wouldn;t go taking a bunch of baking soda...oo muc sodium, plus there;s sometimes a heat response to the oh reacting with the acid that in;t plasant. calcium cms, is much more soothing if you want toarbonate, the main ingredient in ATublem; I remember waking up the morning aftr my go that route.

some women fin that chewing raw alonds, or eating a plaibaked potato, really helps settle the acid down.

you could also try papaya, fresh, for the enxymes, or a yogurt smoothie with ripe bananas.good luck and ike i say, it;ll diapear when you are cuddling your new baby.

When you are pregnant is it important to keep the bowels moving. It helps with the acid reflux too. It is sometimes most difficult to do this as the baby sits right on top of every thing.. LOL

I would recommend a very very mild herbal laxative or find more fruit to add to the diet. Just remember that when the baby's born it will probably like lots of what you ingest now. (when she's old enough to eat food)

Blessing for you and child. I find a shot of vinager to work because it has the same PH as acids in the gut. This is a short term solution and one most think of the tiny microbes that hold the balance and start a probiotic diet rich in yogurts, pickles, olives, kifer,or EM Probiotics.emofcalifornia.com has free shipping!
