Hi all. I have been prescribed st johns wort (in tablet form) and have been taking it for about a month now.

Since taking it, I am feeling a little queazy immediately after taking it, as well as having an acid stomach occasionally. Also I am feeling a little constipated. I also have dark rings under my eyes. Are these symptoms side effects of st johns wort?

What can I do about it? Is there a popular companion herb that anyone could recommend?

I appreciate your input. Thanks.

Hm, I've never actually heard of these particular stomach and constipation symptoms being mentioned with St. John's Wort use before.

However, I have heard that exposure to sun with St. John's Wort is not always a good idea. It can cause skin discoloration and make the eyes more light sensitive. I'd have to research more though.

I wonder if it's your body's way of telling you that's enough for now and to take a break, or maybe you could have some underlying condition that is causing your stomach issues with St. John's Wort. What is the dosage on the supplement (in milligrams or whatever)? Have you ruled everything else out that could be causing your stomach issues?

If one is taking St. John's Wort for depression, I would recommend considering 5-htp, or mentioning it to your health practitioner. I use it, and it works for depression, anxiety and insomnia. I also take Calm's Forte (which you can search online) and/or passionflower tea. I find this actually works better for me than St. John's Wort (which was making my eyes very light sensitive). Good luck and health to you!

Greetings. Taking herbs in pill form is relatively new, so I suspect a lot of things could happen. We also have no way of actually knowing what is in a capsule and this worries me. If you want to continue with this herb, I would suggest finding dried herb and making an infusion or taking it in tinture form (an alcohol extract-which should be bright red).

I am not sure what you are trying to accomplish by taking St Johnswort, but another option would be to look at other herbs. If you are taking it for depression, I agree with mushroomgirl..that finding another herb might be helpful. I like oastraw infusions, which help to nourish the nervous system. You would use dried herb 1 ounce of herb to 1 quart of water steeped for 4-8 hours.

yes its for depression, stabilizing me through a difficult period of personal problems.-

I can give you the exact ingredients of the tablets,- the immediate queazyness is probably because of the tablets coating. I am alright if I take them with a meal (as indicated on the paket). But the rings under eyes and constipation gradually appeared, and seem to be related to the herb itself.

Switching to a tincture or such might be an idea..- As the effects have only just really kicked in properly, I dont want to switch to a different herb, unless the symptoms worsen.. I like the way it works, apart from the side effects.

a local physician here said that she asks people to check for liver strain after 30 days, as some people are liable to have liver damage from it.
has anyone else here heard that?

            Hi,
I have just joined because I had severe side- effects when taking (excessive) amounts of St Johns Worth. I was stupid enough to take 7.2 g of St. Johns Worth (= 36 mg hyperforin) in tabletform for about 3 weeks after a severe bout of depression. My liver almost did not make it. It was swollen and hurt and I had hepatitis like symptoms, even now after discontinuing the drug for a month I still have excessive hair loss. And I did not get my period. I always felt extremely tired and dizzy, almost like when in a severe hangover. I did not have photosensitivity however, because my skin is fairly olive colour. My liver is well again, thank God, but I will not take that herb again. I have read, that baby rats whose mothers were fed st. johns wort doses comparable to human doses had severe liver damage with lesions all over the liver even after a short time nursing on those mothers. It also can couse blindness in animals and even death.

Don't take it when you have a weak liver or take only very smal amounts!
            cheers

I know that St. John's Wort does not like "playing" with chemical medicines or even chemicals in food - one of the biggest examples is rendering birth control pills nearly useless (though not reversing the damage done by them that I know of).

However, I don't know about any interactions when mixing with other herbs or natural foods, etcetera. But it sounds like for whatever reason you want to get gentle, emollient/demulcent and nutritive herbs to clear what you are experiencing. Rings under eyes are almost always attributed to kidneys - and constipation is self-explanatory. I like the oatstraw suggestion here. I also like comfrey and alfalfa. Parsley is good for helping kidneys. If St. John's Wort works for depression, that is great but if it doesn't you might need different herbs. My friends use Kava Kava when St. John's Wort didn't work for them - apparently, it was a different energetic issue. Keep us posted OK?

      Thank you ElvenPath

I have a very healthy diet, with hardly any processed foods., nor am I taking any other chemical medicines. I do have two cups of (strong, organic) coffee in the morning, and then several cups of green/white tea to try and alleviate the negative effects of coffee. I am taking a daily multivitamin and occasionally a natural source Vit C. But I was taking these before problem free.

So would you recommend taking Oatstraw, Comfrey and Alfalfa to supplement the St Johns Wort? And if so, in what form. (I am only familiar with Alfalfa as sprouts on a salad f.eg.)

      Thanks for your help! jana

Sounds like you are OK at least that way. Hmmm, what are you taking St. John's Wort for? Maybe something else would work better? For instance, I know many take it for depression, and have found that Kava Kava actually works better. Some people take it for pain relief, but there are other herbs like Bugleweed and Wild Lettuce that may also help - so I guess that is my next question hehe! ;-)

A follow-up note about Comfrey use internally (thanks for pointing this out to me Katrina!) :-)

I have been trained by Dr. Christopher's School of Natural Healing and obtained my MH in 2007. It is true that the FDA does not recommend Comfrey for internal use due to alkaloids that cause liver and bladder tumors. A casual glance at what the FDA approves and doesn't approve is very much sided with Big Pharma, rather than the consumer - and Big Pharma HATES competition!

Here is the "rub" on Comfrey: When the FDA tested it, they didn't test Comfrey, the plant. They tested the isolated CHEMICAL constituents/alkaloids ALONE, without the natural balance of the plant material. They then injected staggering amounts into rats - and remarkably only half died. Find these reports and see for yourself and make up your own mind. They did the same type of demonizing for Sassafras as well. In the case of Comfrey - a human would need to eat an entire barrel-full a day in order to match these tests! Not only that, at least the barrel-full of Comfrey is the plant, which is in balance according to nature, and not so out-of-balance the way man-made chemicals are.

I have personally used comfrey (both leaf and root) and never ever experienced problems. However, if some of you out there want to be extra sure - do that liver cleanse/nourish this Spring before use - and you may also want to do a kidney/bladder treatment (I use parsley, juniper berries, nettle, alfalfa, uva ursi, dandelion leaves - and drink unsweetened cranberry juice with stevia to sweeten) for at least a week. Use Comfrey leaf instead of the root, since there are less constituents than in the root. However, with broken bones, etcetera, the root gets my vote - because nearly all the plant would go to the injury area in order to begin rebuilding. To know if you are getting enough comfrey, take it until there is generally no more pain (the body is SMART, give it what it needs hehe)!

I hope this helps you - please feel free to ask other questions!

    Orange,

I've taken this info directly from an at home resource I keep around - The Complete Guide to Herbal Medicines written by
Charles Fetrow Pharm. D. & Juan Avila, Pharm. D.

Taking St Johns with any of these things could result in an adverse reaction:

    * Alcohol and other drugs which slow the nervous system such as cold and allergy drugs, flu meds, decongestants & narcotic pain relievers
    * Amphetamines
    * Antidepressants called MAO Inhibitors
    * " " called selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors
    * Desyrel
    * Tricyclic antidepressants
    * Avoid foods & bevs that contain "tyramine", such as Chianti Wine, beer, aged cheese, chicken livers, chocolate, bananas & meat tenderizers. Also avoid sun exposure.

St Johns Wort is also an Immunosuppresant

In another book I own called "Herb Contraindications & Drug Interactions" by Francis Brinker N.D. there are 3-4 pages chock FULL of interactions on St Jonhs. It really doesn't work well with any other med and I'd imagine that it also effects the absorption of any vitamins / supplements you take. It seems to interfere with everything. So I'd only recommend it if you're on a water and air diet!

If you're coming up on menopause or after it, Black Cohosh has clinical information about improving depressive mood and hot flashes while also being a much better source of estrogen than traditional meds. Also, the Triterpenoid Saponins in Ginseng have been shown to improve depression as well as a host of other things without having many adverse effects. It's also an Adaptogen. However, ginseng is one of those supplements that is very hard to standardize. The root is actually very expensive because it is slow growing (takes 6 years to create a marketable product from a root) so what you are finding on the local vitamin stands is often mislabelled and simply adulterated. Side effects have been reported mostly in the form of Insomnia and less frequently diarrhea & skin eruptions. The best grades of Ginseng is Korean Red. Of one study conducted on commercial Ginseng, 60% was worthless Ginseng w/ no medicinal quality & 25% had NO Ginseng in it whatsoever. If you can find the real thing, it's a wonderful aid in many many ways. So far it seems long term use has no serious side effects. The jury is still out on many herbs in that department however.

Excersize is another extremely important component useful for treating depression. Actually, it's probably the MOST useful tool to have.

    Good Luck!

Oh, thanks Katrina.. according to that list I am only having to keep my intake of chocolate in check.. haha- and I guess I dont eat enough of it to be a problem.

What you wrote about Ginseng is also what I heard.. and its good stuff if you can get it. However, I have also heard that it is too Yang for women, and can be too strong to use just as a booster/supplement.. and really should be considered medical.

I have forgotten the name of the Yin equivalent herb, that chinese women have taken for years to help counteract the effects of menopause etc, but I remember that Nutrilite do a preparation of it..
But that isnt my nor my daughters reason for taking St Johns Wort, so I havent checked into it lately.

I have taken the suggestion by one of the other posters and am sprouting Alfalfa and other seeds, to help boost,- since that seems like a good Winter activity anyway.

Thank you for looking that up for me, I feel a little relieved.

I am experiencing many of the same symptoms, exept the constipation and upset stomach, but i do often have a "lump" in my throat/ esophagus for up to a day after taking the st johns wort, i had assumed it was because of the gelatin capsules and how sticky they can
become once wet, have considered emptieing them out into a tissue and "parachuting" them.
I am bi-polar and i take melatonin at night and st. johns wort in the morning, this really helps to balance me out in a more gentle way
and i am sure it is a much healthier alternative to the nasty seroquel, lithium, clozapine, luvox, et.c. which zombiefy you, Celexa gave me convulsions and hallucinations after 2 doses for gods sake. but should i be concerned about long term health effects from either of these?

This is a good list of things to avoid with St Johns Wort from Katrina.

I had a consultation with a well-respected naturopath and herbalist in Seattle.

She went over all my herbs and medications, and noted that the triptan class of drugs- like Imitrex, Maxalt, etc prescribed for migraines is not compatible with St Johns Wort, so I would add that to the list.

Apparently the triptan class of drugs act (at least in part) on the serotonin levels in the brain, and this is part of it's (often amazing) ability to abort migraines and is much safer than the older migraine meds.

I believe she was using a nurse's guide to Rx meds as part of her references, I don't know which one.

I am unaware of St. John's Wort on its own (or mixed with other herbs) having what I would call "reactions" hehehe!

However, there are many counter-interactions with St. John's Wort and chemical drugs, be they over-the-counter or prescription. This plant does not play well with man-made stuff at all! One of the most common is the rendering of birth control pills as useless.

Is this an issue for you? Are you using things (even eating foods) that are mostly chemicals? If so, that could be the issue, and you may wish to either eliminate the chemicals, or try another herb that will not interact (my suggestion is to eliminate chemicals if possible though!)

      >>"Is this an issue for you? Are you using things (even eating foods) that are mostly chemicals? If so..."

Wowza, if this were the case, maybe simply coming off chem-food would be more than enough to improve the mood without any stabilizer! I know when I eat anything chemical I suffer for it in many ways, physically and emotionally. I can fell it almost immediately and the effects last for about 24 hrs.

Greetings. If as you said, you would prefer to continue taking St Johnswort, a strategy that might work really well is to take a tincture instead of a capsule (as I suggested previosly) and take it in drop doses. Take very small amounts ie 3-5 drops 3x per day. This is enough to stimulate your body, yet gentle enough that it is less likely to cause the problems you describe. Some herbalists are strong proponents of this method. I choose this method under certain circumstances and I suspect this may be a good place for it's application. You are likely RIGHT about that Katrina! :-) Of course this is the "danger" that happens, people casually reading that St. John's Wort used allopathically to cure their depression, just like taking a pill that alleviates symptoms - it doesn't exactly work that way hehehe!

Any herbal practitioner totally emphasizes proper diet, as often the herbs will do nothing if the dietary issues are not corrected. I can also tell you that many people out there are not interested in changing their diets - they just want the quick fix. I am not saying this about anyone here on this Tribe - I am speaking of my general experience with people once they find out I am a trained herbalist. It is funny that way!

          Hi,
I have read over some of the posts not all so please forgive if I repeat what someone else said.
I make my own St. John's Wort Tincture from plant that I wildcraft. It is so amazing and no side-effects.
I have heard of the photo sensitivity with its use but know no one personally who has experienced this with the tincture.
I am not sure but I am wondering if the liver damaging effects are from a standardized form of the plant and not the whole plant.
Dry herb capsules can be standardized herb......this may make the herb stronger, but it's process removes other components that may
protect the liver or in St. John's Wort's case, heal the liver....it was traditionally used as a liver healing herb.
It is a wonderful herb for healing and supporting us through depression. When my mom died I took it everyday for about six month.
          Peace, Julie

I've been taking st johns wort for about a month now. I also have a lump in my throat that doesn't seem to go away, but I never really attributed it to st Johns. Is this a documented side effect? For the first 2 weeks I took the capsule form ,then now i am taking the tablet form but I still have the lump so not sure if it is related to the gelatin.

Is it not safe to use st johns wort tincture that is not bright red? I have made this tincture 3 times. The first time it was bright red, but for some reason, the next two times it was browny and had this weird swirrling haze in it. one of these was fresh and one was dry and both had the same problem. When I got it right the first time, it was dried. I do'nt take it because I am not sure, so I am thinking about just buying it.

You could try taking St John's Wort as a flower essence, if you really like how it makes you feel. That way you would be getting the energetic imprint of the plant without the negative side effects.
