Is it safe to pick dandelions, dig up their roots or pick chickweed from a horse pasture? I did last year and rinsed the goods off and dehydrated the dandelion roots.... However I now have a brand new baby that I am nursing so I just want to double check to ensure everything is o.k..... or if anyone knows of any potential hazards... Where we live houses horses about 1/2 the year so needless to say horse manure is in the ground;)

Re: Safe to forage in horse pasture?
Wed, April 1, 2009 - 9:00 AMWhat were the horses fed? Organic food?
Are the horses exposed to pesticides? Many are due to flies.
Are they medicated? Antibiotics and other drugs could end up in the manure.
There could be a risk of salmonella if eating raw or partially cooked.

Re: Safe to forage in horse pasture?
Fri, April 10, 2009 - 8:24 AMI put fresh horse manure right on Top of the soil in the garden.. tis good for the greenies with Nitrogen and such.
Salmonella, yeah I'd look out for that.. moreso in low areas of the pasture where water pools when the rain comes
