I have always heard cranberry (berries or juice) is excellent for this. My wife always takes it when she has one, and an uncle of mine was prescribed this back in Ireland for kidney problems as well. They're also finding it works great for unclogging arteries as well.

My favorite single herb for UTI is Pipsisiwa (chimophillia umbelata) It also treats some kidney related issues like protein leakage.

It is also called prince pine and is found in the mountains around the North West.

Cranberry Juice will work but there's tons of sugar in it. Better just use a handful of blue berries-that will do the trick. Learned this by watching Jerry Brunetti:

I had a pretty bad one once - was all the way in my kidneys causing me pain, and I kicked it entirely without antibiotics in less time!

Think GALLONS when drinking water - I drank distilled so everything would wash out just fine. NO carbonated drinks, no sugar (or even honey to make sure), no coffee, no non-herbal tea - period! I got the super-sour Cranberry Juice at the health food store then sweetened it with Stevia. The only dairy I had was live yogurt with fresh lemon juice and stevia. The bread I ate was sprouted grain/flourless, and of course I ate raw garlic mixed in my food when I could.

Dandelion Leaves would have been great, but it was winter and no leaves were up to use. So I used a tincture I already had, which contained lots of Juniper Berries. It also had Turmeric, Burdock, Yellow Dock, Cardamon and Dandelion Root. I gave a shot of this tincture into my mouth and chased it with cranberry juice and water about 2-3 times a day. I drank enough distilled water and Parsley tea (made in distilled water) than I care to remember! I am a Reiki II so I also gave myself Reiki to heal faster. It worked.

For infections in general? As long as the colon, liver and kidneys are clear, you want to clean the blood. Again, Burdock, Yellow Dock, and Turmeric are great. Also, Red Clover is a great blood cleanser. And don't forget raw garlic! ;-)

I find that balancing my ph with a cap full of apple cider vinegar a few times a day during an infection helps alot and then also usnea tincture works wonders. usnea is good for urinary and fungal infections.

I use cleavers. They are known for detoxification, reducing irritation and as a diuretic. They make you pee more, and they clear out your lymphatic system.. They are good for salads -no fear of toxicity. I chop a cup or so everyday into my salad as soon as I think one is coming on. I aso use a wash (not a douche!) with a drop of GSE (grapefruit seed extract) in it. just H2O and GSE. I also drink the gse in water.

asparagus is a diuretic 9and it's in season in the northern hemisphere right now.) I;e never used it to treat irritations of the urinary system but i can see where it could help. it makes sense though; it's great for anything lke premenstrual water retention and the type of cramps that sometiems go with it. most salad greens, especially the dark and/or slightly bitter ones (outer leaves of raomaine, dandelion, arugula, spinach, endive, frisee) and edible flowers will relly help too. another grat diuretic food is watermelon, which doesn;t in season, or watermelon seeds, which you mayhave saved...tey can also be purchased as a dried herbal remedy in powder form most often. be sure that any seeds ou use are from organic fruit and that you don;t use seeds that have been treated with anti-fungals.

and I wuld avoid caffeine, yes, and black pepper. some people also can't take hot chile pepper when their bladders are irritated. you want to soothe more than inflame.

carrot juice is really soothing too//if it;s too sweet and unctuous, try it wither hald and half with orange o grapefruit juice, or in a vegetable coctail with cucumber juice and greens. I had the carrot and orange juice combination nearly eery morning while traveling through Mexico as a young backpacker, and it kept me healthy.

I agree with the cranberry juice, but also, blueberries have the same substances as cranberries, so blueberries or their juice is good too. Also agree with drinking as much as you can stand of just about anything. Some say to avoid caffeine, as that can irritate, but if that's the only way you can get yourself to drink, then just dilute your tea or coffee as much as you can stand. Drink until you feel your stomach is sloshing!

Finally, my mother used to swear by asparagus and/or the water it was cooked in. She used to freeze the water she had cooked asparagus in to save for if she had a bladder infection and it really helped her. I don't remember trying it myself so can't say much more about it.

there is also freeze-dried cranberry available in gelvaps 9vegetarian type available) or powder. if you can;t get all the bottled juice down, they really help.also there is an unsweetened cranberry concentrate that can be added to water (sparkiling water is great!) or stirre into yogurt or other smoothies...

Cranberry juice is great as is corn silk and nettle infusions. Drinking nettle and cranberry juice on a regular basis can treat as well help prevent chronic urinary tract infections.

I would also suggest getting a copy of this book: The Herbal Handbook: A User's Guide to Medical Herbalism by David Hoffman

This book is really helpful as it outlines different body systems and describes the herbs that are effective for that system and what aspect each herb influences ie there are certain herbs specific to the urinary tract that are good at addressing infection as well as inflamation.
Blessings

all the earlier sugestions are good. i;d also add uva ursi or manzanita leaves brewed into an infusion, avoiding refined sugars and straches, drinking plenty of water, and that old infection-fighting standby, quality echinacea tincture.

my usual advice with echinacea...make sure it is a product of the root, no one of these 'echinacea supreme' things that includes aerial parts; they dilute the efects n my opinion. always taste any echinacea product; good-quality echincea give you an odd, 'blue" numbness hwen it touches the lips o tongue. if you don;t get that, it;s made from stale roots and is useless.

I always take echincea throughout the day in tincture form for any active infection, take extra Vtamin C to balance it, and con tnue for 2 or days past when the symptoms begin to subside, jsutas you would with an antibiotic drug, although the mechanisms are differnt.

for a UTI, eat as much fresh raw garlic as you can tolerate. I lke to blend it into a Polarity style lier flush with organic lemon juice and olive oil.

if you are still using artificial sweeteners in any form, ths is a GreAT time to stop. my mther said she was getting UIs when she was drinking Diet tab...I'm not surprised.

I also lkegentle cleansing herbs such as red clover blossoms, and soothign, demlcent herbs such as slippery elm (the tablets fo the throat elp too, o ou can take tem in capsule form if the sime factor is too much for you) marshmallow roo.

a sitz bath with mmfrwy root or leaf or both, maybe alittle ginger 9also good as tea) and marshmallow root can be very soothing.

keep your hands scrupulously clean and wash kind of fanatically but not oo abrasively, especailyl after a bowel movement.

a little comfrey and/or aloe vera ointment applied to the irethra sometimes helps if some of the irritation is near the body surface.
keep drinking water!

I've had good luck with a mix of chickweed, dandelion leaf, and yarrow flowers equal parts steeped in roughly a cup of hot water and taken as a tea 3-4 times daily until resolved plus a day or two. Make it fresh for each dose and sweeten with honey. It is pretty bitter so you may really need to get yourself/client psyched to use it.

As was already mentioned, lots of cranberry juice will help change the pH of the urine to an acidic one so IF the person's baseline urine pH is basic, that can help.

Either way, it's very important to push fluids to help flush the urinary track.

As far as general infections, that is a really broad question with too many variables to give a very good answer for. There are a lot of general immune system strengtheners with Echinacea purpurea being one of the most popular. I would suggest you do a bit of reading from one of the many great authors (Weed, Gladstar, Moore) on the subject or at very least pop into an herbal apothecary and speak with the herbalist.
