My mother just got her tooth pulled and it was really infected. Does anyone know any good herbs to use to help heal and draw out any remaining infection. (esp. but not only, local herbs to the PNW)
I was thinking a poultice of comfrey leaf...any other suggestions?
Also, her gums are really weak because she has been battling parasites related to Candida. What are good herbal treatments to strengthen and clean gums. Tea tree? Others?
Thank you All...

Re: Teeth and Gums (also posted in herbal medicine)
Mon, December 15, 2008 - 8:35 PMPlantain (Plantago sp) poultice would be healing. I would choose this over comfrey in the initial stages of healing. This herb has a drawing actions, is astringing and promotes healing.
Garden sage (Salvia officinalis) makes a really nice antiseptic and astringing mouth rinse. Since you are looking for herbs in your bioregion I would not choose tea tree as it is imported from a differnt continent-not very sustainable to use this herb. And personally I am not a big fan of ingesting essential oils.
Just to note, candida does not cause parasites. Candida is a yeast that we all have as part of our gut flora. At times when other beneifical yeasts and bacterias are out of balance candida is opportunitic and replicates itself without competition. Parasites are a whole different story. Sage can be helpful in strengthening her gums but you really need to be more clear about the other pieces. Does she have candida over growth, does she also have parasites. With parasites, I would want stool sample for confirmation, otherwise she could end up taking herbs that would really mess up her system, potentially for no reason.
Hopefully that is helpful.

Re: Teeth and Gums (also posted in herbal medicine)
Tue, December 16, 2008 - 1:59 AMYes, that will help. She has been to doctors.. and you know how western medicine is. They told her she had a skin condition, when her entire body is experiencing symptoms of candida. She has deducted from her own research and talking to other women, that it is Candida. She may also have parasites, I am not sure. I have advised her to eat whole foods and avoid sugar, yeast, flour, and to consume lots of antioxidants. I also referred to her the post in the Cleansing.Tribe about candida, specifically the bit about paul pitchfords daily cleanse of uncooked brown rice, oil of oregano, and grapeseed oil extract. Any other suggestions?
Also...
Why would you choose plantain over comfry initially?
Thank you for your time and perspective..Tis much appreciated. -

Re: Teeth and Gums (also posted in herbal medicine)
Tue, December 16, 2008 - 10:11 AMGreetings. Two things 1. Plantain because it has a drawing action (drawing out potential infection) and will heal a little more slowly. Comfrey promotes healing from the outside in very quickly and it here is infection it could seal it and cause more problems. 2. grapefruit seed extract, before you suggest this you may want to read this thread from the Herbal Wisdom Tribe, which describes how this is processed, pretty harsh stuff: tribes.tribe.net/herbalwis...20bdef94c2

Re: Teeth and Gums (also posted in herbal medicine)
Tue, December 16, 2008 - 11:51 AMI've had superb results with STRONG echinacea tincture as an antibiotic alternati with the echinacea, get one that's pure, strong ROOT tincture (the specific :1:1 weight volume is best) without a bunch of aerial parts and such. unfortunately, a lot of companies are more inserested in selling "echinacea supreme" blends rather than letting you choose and blend youro wn medicines.
. myrrh gum,no pun, is also excellent, and yerba mansa if you can get it.
the echinacea extract: it much ike you would take penicillin..a good dropperful at least four times a day. I like to carry a dropper bottle with me and take about half a dropperful every time I feel somethig a little "off" in a tooth that's been abscessed. I keep the echinacea going for two to three days after symptoms start to subside, exactly as ou are supposed to do with penicillin o most antibiotics. I also take sustaine-release Vitamin C when I'm doing heavy echinacea; seems to keep things incding intestinal health in bettr balance.
ECO dental makes a wonderful herbal mouth rinse that really helps tooth and gum infections, but for a bad abscess you will need something that works systemically, like the echinacea tincture, as well.
my dentist, actually more than one dentist. initially thought I was being irresponsible for declining antibiotics for serious abscesses, but the results were really inpressive..from severe pain and clear swelling to no sign of infection after three days of echinacea treatment and they don;t nag me about it any more.
warm compresses to the affected area of the cheek help. -

Re: Teeth and Gums (also posted in herbal medicine)
Wed, December 17, 2008 - 7:13 AMI'll second the echinacea & myrrh suggetions, and also add propolis, spilanthes & low doses of bloodroot.
I used all of those (plus low doses of bloodroot tincture -- 5 drops at a time held on the area a few times a day) when I had a tooth that was infected & the gum swelled.
I used the bloodroot, & also I took a strong tincture of echincaea (flower, leaf, root & seed) that i made, and mixed it with cleavers & calendula. I also used a mouth swish of myrrh, propolis, echinacea, & spilanthes, or just straight spilanthes. And I used the spilanthes as a swish whenever I would start to feel pain. It would help numb it besides everything else it does.
At first, I was doing everything besides the bloodroot, which was helping, but not totally doing it. I asked my wholistic physiology teacher what he recommended, and he said definately bloodroot. When I added that, it started to take the inflammation down.
I did the echinacea internally pretty often, & like Judith mentioned, I also would carry it with me and I would take a dropper whenever I felt the need to do it, but at least 4x a day (usually more).
Not so much with the Bloodroot, it is a strong plant. Just a few times a day. -
